The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding a petition seeking to cancel the results of the NEET-UG 2024 exam due to allegations of a paper leak. The court emphasized that the sanctity of the examination had been compromised and demanded answers from the NTA, although it allowed the counselling process to continue.
The petition, filed by Telangana and Andhra Pradesh students, highlights discrepancies in scores and alleged preferential treatment. The petitioners have called for the cancellation of the May 5 exam results and the administration of a new exam. They pointed out irregularities such as unjustified grace marks, statistically improbable scores, and allegations of mass cheating.
Specifically, the petitioners noted that 67 students from one coaching centre scored a perfect 720 out of 720, and over 13,000 students contested the provisional answer key. The plea stressed the risks of cheating in medical exams, emphasizing potential dangers to patient safety and undermining meritocracy and fairness in society.
The Supreme Court will next hear the case on July 8, alongside a similar plea before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Meanwhile, the NTA has formed a high-powered committee to address grievances from 1,600 students who took the NEET 2024 exam.
