Maldives Environment Minister Fathima Shamnaz Ali Saleem was arrested for allegedly performing black magic on President Mohamed Muizzu. Reports indicate that Shamnaz, her ex-husband Adam Rameez, who was a minister at the President’s Office, and two others were charged with using witchcraft to gain favour with Muizzu. The arrests occurred on June 23, and all four suspects were remanded for seven days. Shamnaz was suspended from her role as state minister at the environment ministry on Wednesday. Police Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shifan confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Shamnaz’s name has been removed from the list of current political appointees on the Maldives Environment Ministry’s website. Previously, both she and her ex-husband served on the Male City Council with Muizzu when he was mayor. After Muizzu became president, Shamnaz resigned from the council and was appointed state minister at the official presidential residence, Muliaage, before moving to the environment ministry. Rameez, a close aide to Muizzu, has been absent from the public eye for five months. The Maldives government and the president’s office have not yet made any official statements on the matter.
