Six cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in Pune, India, including two pregnant women who are currently asymptomatic. The first case was a 46-year-old doctor, followed by his 15-year-old daughter. Health officials identified other cases: a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Erandwane, another 12-week pregnant woman, a 47-year-old woman, and a 22-year-old man from Mundhwa. The Pune Municipal Corporation is taking steps to control mosquito breeding, such as fogging and fumigation, and has collected 25 samples for testing. Zika, spread by Aedes mosquitoes also responsible for dengue and chikungunya, is particularly dangerous for pregnant women as it can cause microcephaly. In this severe birth defect, the baby’s head is abnormally small due to brain development issues.
